VERSAILLES, Ky. – On Wednesday afternoon, the Midway women's tennis team opened their home campaign as well as its River States Conference slate when it faced off with IU Kokomo (Ind.). Thanks to a quartet of singles victories, the Eagles claimed a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over the visiting Cougars.
With the win, the Eagles improve to 1-6 on the season and 1-0 in RSC action while IU Kokomo falls to 5-10 overall and 1-1 in RSC play.
In doubles play, the duo of Agustina Olivero (Montevideo, Uruguay) and Mara Guillen (Madrid, Spain) picked up a 6-2 victory at the No. 1 position. IU Kokomo, however, earned wins at the No. 2 and 3 slots to win the doubles point.
The Blue and Gold tied the match at one point each when Ana Larreal (Maracay, Venezuela) earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory at the No. 3 position. The Cougars regained the lead with a victory at No. 4 singles but the Eagles tied it up once again when Guillen earned a 6-0, 6-3 triumph at No. 2.
The visitors regained the lead once more with a victory at the No. 5 slot, but Grace Froedge (Louisville, Ky.) equalized with a 6-4, 6-4 win at the No. 6 position. Midway then clinched the victory when Olivero won 6-1, 7-6 (2) at No. 1 singles.
The Eagles return to the court on Thursday, March 16 when it travels to Hanover, Indiana for a match with Hanover College. First serve is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET.
