LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Midway men's tennis team played its first River States Conference match of the 2023 season when it hosted Brescia (Ky.) at the Lexington Tennis Club. After winning all three matches in doubles play, the Eagles took every singles match in straight sets to earn a 7-0 victory over the Bearcats.
With the win, Midway improves to 5-7 for the year and 1-0 in RSC play while Brescia falls to 1-5 overall and 1-1 in conference action.
The Blue and Gold opened their day with Daniele Trentin (Venice, Italy) and Izan Casado (Leon, Spain) cruising to a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles. Midway then clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory by Lakshay Vivek (Haryana, India) and Julian Lopez (Bogota, Colombia) at the No. 2 position. At No. 1 doubles, Paul Wamba (Dschang, Cameroon) and Aditya Roy Chowdhury (Kolkata, India) completed the sweep with a 6-4 triumph.
In singles action, Chowdhury earned a 6-3, 6-1 win at the No. 1 position while Lopez won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2. Wamba picked up a 6-2, 6-2 triumph in the No. 3 slot and reigning RSC Player of the Week Vivek cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4.
At the No. 5 position, German Collado (Alcala de Henares, Spain) claimed a 6-3, 6-2 win. Midway closed the sweep when Trentin bounced back from a challenging first set to earn a 7-5, 6-0 victory.
The Blue and Gold will look to improve to 2-0 in RSC play when it hosts Oakland City (Ind.) on Saturday, April 8. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. ET at the Falling Springs Tennis Center in Versailles, Ky.
