Karpinski, Garcia earn wins at Spartan Wrestling Invitational

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Two freshman came out on top of their weight classes and Midway wrestlers had nine top-five finishes at the Spartan Invitational, hosted by Missouri Baptist Saturday.

Aidan Karpinski was the victor at 149 pounds, with Aaron Garcia taking first at 285.

It was a dominant 3-0 day for Karpinski, who earned an 18-2 tech fall and a 13-1 major decision in his opening matches. He then capped things off with a 6-1 decision over Hayden Rofkahr of University of the Ozarks (Ark.) in the finals.

Garcia's day was highlighted by a pair of pinfalls, the last of which came just 1 minute, 34 seconds into his final-round match against Jacob Bader of Missouri Baptist.

The Eagles had three second-place finishes as well. Nolan Jones finished 2-1 at 141, Sebastian Hutchinson was 2-1 at 174 and JT Adams was 3-1 at 197, earning two pins and a tech fall after losing his opening match.

Other top-five Midway finishers were Chris Begley (fourth, 157), Zach Lewis (fifth, 125), Daylon Stafford (fifth, 165) and Ernst Lavaud Jr. (fifth, 184).

The Eagles will return to the Show-Me State in less than a week, traveling to Marshall for the Missouri Valley Invitational next Friday and Saturday.
