LEBANON, Tenn. - Top-five finishes from Christopher Sperin and Aidan Karpinski in open 149-pound competition paced the Midway wrestling team, which concluded the regular season at the Cumberland Open Saturday.
Sperin got all the way to the finals before ultimately placing second, while Karpinski finished fourth, recording six straight wins at one point.
Following a first-round bye, Sperin started competition with a 16-0 tech fall against Isaiah Hendricks of Central Baptist (Ark.). He followed that up with a 4-1 decision against Ramiro Mosquera of Cumberland (Tenn.) and a 6-5 decision against Cameron Crump of Life (Ga.)
The perfect run ended in the finals, though, with Sperin suffering a 7-4 defeat to CJ Shandinger of Reinhardt (Ga.).
Karpinski got on a roll after dropping a 5-4 decision to Cumberlands' (Ky.) Ty Lehman. After receiving a bye in the consolation round, his next four matches featured two pinfalls, a forfeit and a 15-4 major decision.
He then got a major challenge from Crump in the consolation semifinals, but prevailed 6-5. Lehman would get the better of him again in the consolation finals, winning 7-3.
Two other Eagles finished Saturday with winning records. Chris Begley was 4-2 at 157, with Sebastian Hutchinson going 3-2 at 174.
Midway now has two weeks to prepare for the postseason. The Eagles will take part in the Mid-South Conference Championships in Bowling Green on Feb. 17
