KINGSPORT, Tenn. - Various Midway program records fell during the three-day Mid-South Women's Swimming Conference Championships over the weekend, resulting in the Eagles having their best tournament finish in team history
Midway finished in fourth place with a final score of 313, well ahead the of the 176 points scored by fifth-place Campbellsville. The University of the Cumberlands were first with 900 points, with Indiana Wesleyan second with 804.
Team records began falling in the first event, as the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Josie Briner, Sammy Friel, Riette Bloomfield and Madison Richey set a new mark with their third-place swim of 1:41.12.
That was the first of five records Friel had a hand in. By the end of the first day, she had another in the 200 individual medley, where she placed sixth in 2:12.45.
On day two, the junior from Franklin, Tenn. recorded the team's best individual finish of the tournament in the 100 breaststroke, placing third in a Midway-record 1:06.58. She also swam a program record of 30.91 seconds in the 50 breast Saturday.
She then capped the tournament with record swim of 2:27.16 in the 200 breaststroke Saturday, finishing sixth.
Briner and Lauren Kinzeler also set individual records Saturday. Briner placed fourth in the 200 butterfly in 2:13.31 in the 200 butterfly, coming in fourth in 2:13.31. Kinzeler swam a 28.42 in the 50 back.
The final record of the weekend went to Katie Heath for her 19:15.08 finish in the 1650 freestyle.
In non-school record finishes, the Eagles took fourth in three different relays.
The 400 medley relay team of Friel, Briner, Bloomfield and Kinzeler swam a 4:04.53; Kinzeler, Friel, Briner and Richey 1:51.59 in the 200 medley and Richey, Heath, Friel and Briner a 3:48.64 in the 400 free, the tournament's final race.
