Women's tennis drops non-conference match at Centre

DANVILLE, Ky. - Midway earned a split in singles play, but a 3-0 doubles performance by Centre proved to be the difference as the Colonels topped the Eagles 6-3 in women's tennis Thursday night.

Normally playing NAIA rules where one point is earned by the team that wins two doubles matches, the Eagles played Thursday's match against the Division-III Colonels by NCAA rules, where each doubles match counts as a point.

The Eagles earned victories at the Nos. 1, 4 and 6 singles spots, all three in straight sets.

Reigning River States Conference Player of the Week Agustina Olivero easily handled Maddy Trinh 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1, while Paula Rueda won by a similar score (6-1, 6-3) over Natalie Black at No. 4.

Grace Froedge easily won her first set 6-2 over Sophie Maddux before battling for a tight 7-6 victory in set two to come away victorious at No. 6.

In the only singles match to go three sets, Mara Guillen lost a marathon third set to Grace Williams in her 5-7, 6-2, 12-10 defeat at No. 2.

The Eagles will continue their grueling non-conference schedule on Saturday when they host NAIA 13th-ranked Union (Ky.) at noon.
