Eagles crush IUS in women's tennis conference opener

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. - Midway women's tennis coach Adam Malik hoped a challenging non-conference schedule would pay off when River States play began, and the early returns came back very positive Sunday.

The Eagles didn't drop a single set in a 7-0 win at Indiana Southeast in a match that was moved from Friday to Sunday due to bad weather.

Starting out ahead after the Grenadiers forfeited the No. 3 doubles spot, Agustina Olivero and Mara Guillen earned a comfortable 6-1 win at No. 1, while Grace Froedge and Angelia Herrera were victorious 6-4 at No. 2.

Things only got more decisive in singles play, as the Eagles won five matches in straight sets and one via forfeit, while dropping more than one game only once.

Olivero, Guillen and Froedge all duplicated their success from doubles, while Herrera got the forfeit at the No. 6 position. Olivero defeated Anna Littlefield 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1, Guillen beat Katie Weimer 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 and Froedge beat Maci Vaughn 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5.

Nos. 3 and 4 were won by identical 6-1, 6-0 scores, with Nana Hishida beating Elana Hamby and Paula Rueda topping Syrenia Hardy.

Now 4-6 overall, Midway has a non-conference home matchup against in-state foe Asbury at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. The Eagles will follow that with two RSC matches against Indiana East at home next Friday and Shawnee State (Ohio) on the road Saturday.
