MIDWAY, Ky. - Five days after earning what was then
the most lopsided conference win in program history, the Midway men's basketball team one-upped itself in a 109-59 drubbing of Indiana Columbus at Marshall Gymnasium Thursday night.
Not only did the 50-point win easily eclipse the River States Conference-record 99-62 win over Oakland City on Saturday, it also soared past the previous team record, a 40-point,
109-69 win against Virginia Lynchburg on Oct. 30, 2023.
After falling behind 5-4 early, a frustrated Akeem Scott called a timeout, then saw his team respond by going on a 21-0 run over the next 4:58. A defense that forced 20 turnovers had four during the run, all of which were turned into baskets at the other end.
The Eagle offense was dominant inside and out, scoring 76 points in the paint and hitting 42 percent (8 of 19) from 3-point range. That dominance extended to the glass, with Midway holding a 61-24 rebounding advantage.
All told, six players scored in double figures, a group led by
Decoreio Smith, who had 18 of his game-high 22 in the first half. Normally known for his 3-point shooting, Smith did his best work at the rim, finishing with four dunks, including three highlight-reel slams in a 2:17 stretch to close the opening half.
Amari Wales added a 17-point, 11-rebound double-double and was one of five Eagles to pull down at least six boards.
Travontae Swift (15 points),
Will VanHook (11),
Miguel Shaw (11) and
Nick Keeton (10) also scored in double-figures, as Midway had every player who took the court score at least two points for the second game in a row.
VanHook had five assists, one more than
Robbie Henry, who led the team with four steals. The Eagle defense gave up its fewest points in a game
since a 71-55 win over St. Mary of the Woods on Feb. 11, 2023.
Midway is now 8-10 overall, but a three-game win streak has gotten the Eagles above .500 in the RSC at 5-4.
The offense is averaging just under 100 points per-game (99.6) in the last three outings, while a defense that was surrendering 89.2 points on average through the first 15 games is giving up just 67.3 in the win streak.
The Eagles will attempt to make it four in a row on Saturday, when they travel to face Indiana Southeast at 1 p.m.
