Sprint Football

Eagles prepare for high-octane rematch with SMWC

WEST TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - After back-to-back wins by the combined scores of 91-12, Midway sprint football hits the road looking to avenge its lone loss of the young 2025 season.

The Eagles (2-1) will face Midwest Sprint Football League Black Division opponent Saint Mary of the Woods (3-0) in a game likely to have major playoff implications.

A Midway victory would make the division race very interesting, while the Pomeroys, who won a 52-36 shootout at Midway in week one, would all but lock up a division title were they to come out on top.

STRENGTH VS. STRENGTH

As is evidenced by a week-one meeting where they combined for 88 points and 991 yards, these two teams are known for their high-powered offenses.

The Pomeroys are first in the MSFL in scoring at 54.7 points per-game with the Eagles in second at 42.3. Midway is currently first in total yards (521) and passing yards (350.3), with the Pomeroys at No. 2 in both categories (406.7 total yards, 285 passing).

The game will feature the league's top two passers in Midway's Christian Carter (905 yards, 11 touchdowns) and SMWC's Jeremiah Tosky (806 yards 8 TDs) as well as most of its receiving leaders.

Eagle wideouts Ayden Bauwens (290 yards) and Quincy Barber (260) are first and second in the MSFL in receiving yards, just ahead of Saint Mary of the Woods' Owen Huff (250). That trio combined for 405 yards and five touchdowns in week one.

SMWC's Corbyn Cleveland and Dameon Miller lead the MSFL with 17 receptions, while Cleveland's four touchdowns are tied for the league lead with Midway's Chase Williams. Cleveland and Williams are fifth and sixth in the Midwest Sprint League in receiving yards with 214 and 207 respectively.

The Eagles also bring in the leading rusher in the MSFL. Fresh off gaining a program-record 178 yards in a 41-12 win over Quincy last week, Demari Edelen leads all runners with 228 yards.

These prolific offenses have created several big-play opportunities for their defenses, and each has taken advantage. Midway leads the MSFL with 15 takeaways and eight sacks, while the Pomeroys lead all teams with 10 interceptions.

Half of those Pomeroy picks have been made by Byran Simmons, who had three interceptions against Midway in week one, the last of which he returned 95 yards for a touchdown. Simmons had another pick-six in a 63-6 win over Oakland City last week.

Midway is led up front by Tristian Euell, who has an MSFL-best four sacks while also recording five tackles for-loss, the second-most in the league. On the back end, Keegan Hill is second to Simmons with three interceptions.

PLAYOFF IMPLICATIONS

If Midway hopes to enter the Midwest Sprint Football League playoffs as the No. 1 seed in the Black Division, a win Saturday is imperative.

A Pomeroy win would give them a two-game lead plus a tie-breaker with three games to play, meaning Midway would have to win out and have the Saint Mary of the Woods lose out to get the top spot.

The top-two seeds in the league's Blank and Red Divisions qualify for the playoffs.

Midway is 0-5 all-time against SMWC, but has scored 80 points in the last two matchups.

Saturday's game at Jay Barrett Field on the campus of West Vigo High School in West Terre Haute, Ind. kicks off at 3 p.m.
