MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway needed just one more win to secure a dual victory over Rio Grande, but the Red Storm rallied down the stretch to steal a 27-23, Mid-South Conference men's wrestling matchup Friday night.
Before the match took place, Midway held a senior day ceremony to commemorate the final home match in the careers of
Garrett Foreman,
Nolan Jones,
Ernst Lavaud Jr. and Chris Sperin.
Jones then played a big hand in the Eagles jumping out to an 18-0 lead with a 16-4 major decision over Conner Blessing at 149 pounds.
That capped a run of Midway winning the first four matches.
Zach Lewis won by forfeit at 125,
Matthew Bryant got a 16-1 tech fall over Jaydon DeHart and
Logan Brown stormed back from a 7-0 deficit to defeat Trey Allen 9-8 at 141.
The lead was cut to 18-12 after a Rio Grande pinfall and forfeit before a dominant, 16-4 tech fall by
Michael Colligan over John Walters at 174 left Midway needed just one win in the last three matches to come out victorious.
They almost got it at 184, as
Sebastian Hutchinson nearly got Justin Bartee, the 19th-ranked wrestler in his class, to the mat for a three-point takedown in the third period, only for Bartee to effectively play defense and win 4-2.
Rio then took control with first-period pins in the final two weight classes, dropping the Eagles to 0-3 in duals this season, with an 0-2 record in the MSC
Midway is off until Dec. 6, when it will travel to Fort Wayne, Ind. for the Indiana Little States Invitational.Â
