JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - Midway women's golf had another strong showing in another challenging tournament, riding a near-medalist performance by
Maryssa Phillips to a second-place finish at the Northeast Tennessee Spring Shootout Tuesday.
The Eagles shot a 67-over par, 643 in the two-round invitational. They came in 16 shots behind NAIA No. 10-ranked Milligan (Tenn.) and were seven shots better than No. 21 Pikeville (Ky.).
The highlight came courtesy of Phillips, who finished the day tied with Pikeville's Carly Crooks atop the leaderboard. Both players shot a plus-10, 154, though Crooks was awarded medalist honors by virtue of a scorecard playoff.
Though she didn't get the individual win, Phillips was able to record the best score of anyone in the 34-player field in round two, where she shot a 74 (+2). This included sinking birdie puts on the par-five third hole and the par-four sixth.
Three other Eagles finished within one shot of each other.
Bree Smith and
Savannah Salchli were part of a three-way tie for 10th with a 164 (+20) while
Kasey Cameron tied for 13th at 165.
Competing as an individual,
Anna New shot a 167 (+26) to finish 16th while
Kelsay Collins completed the scoring in 23rd with a 182 (+38).
Midway has two more tournaments to prepare for the River States Conference Championships, starting with the Eagle Invitational, which they will host at the Griffin Gate Golf Club in Lexington on Monday and Tuesday.
