DANIELS, W. Va. - If it hopes to repeat as the champion of the River States Conference, the Midway women's golf team will have to come from behind to do it.

The Eagles concluded day one of the three-day River States Championships in second place, 10 shots behind Indiana East on Sunday. The Red Wolves currently have four players in the top-10 and are 26-over par with a 314.

Four shots behind Midway's 324 (+26) in third place is Saint Mary of the Woods. Oakland City is one stroke back of the Pomeroys in fourth while Indiana Kokomo rounds out the top five at 333 (+45).

The Eagles are also currently in the runner-up spot individually, as Savannah Salchli is tied for second with a six-over score of 78. Salchli and Chloe McFaddin of Indiana Kokomo are two shots behind Sophia Curry of Indiana East for the lead.

Salchli's best stretch on Sunday came when she birdied twice in a three-hole stretch, recording one of the par-three 13th hole and the par-four 15th.

Also in the top-10 after day one is Kasey Cameron, who is in a three-way tie for ninth place. Cameron is four shots off the lead and two shots back of Salchli with an 80 (+8).

Currently, everyone in the Eagle lineup is two shots behind the teammate directly in front of them in the standings.

Anna New is 14th with an 82 (+10), Kelsay Collins is in a tie for 16th with an 84 (+12) and Anna Simpson is in a tie for 20th with an 86 (+14).

Midway will look to climb its way closer to the lead when second-round play begins Monday morning.
