DANIELS, W. Va. - Down 10 strokes entering the day, Midway was dominant from the start in round two of the River States Conference Women's Golf Championships and will take a five-stroke lead into the final day of competition.
Kasey Cameron and
Savannah Salchli are currently first and second in the standings and the Eagles shot a tournament-best, 24-over par score of 312 Monday, moving into first with a two-day score of 636.
Indiana East,
which shot a 314 on day one, recorded a 327 (+39) Monday to fall into second. All other teams are at least 33 strokes off the lead.
The Eagles took control immediately, capturing the lead as early as the sixth hole. Midway's five golfers, whose average dropped from 82 Sunday to 78.6 Monday, had seven combined birdies in the first five holes with Cameron also recording an eagle on No. 2, a par-five.
In a tie for ninth entering the day, Cameron is now on top of the leaderboard with a two-day score of 155 (+11). Her three-over par 75 on Monday is the best individual round shot by any player at the tournament thus far.
Salchli, who was tied for second after day one, is now alone in the runner-up position with a score of 157 (+13). She followed up a 78 Sunday with a 79 Monday.
Midway's three other golfers all improved from the first day, with no one making a bigger jump than
Kelsay Collins, who cut seven strokes from her opening-round performance, recording a five-over par 77 on Monday.
Collins, who had the third-best individual performance of anyone in round two, is currently tied for seventh place with a two-day score of 161 (+17).
Two strokes back from Collins in 10th place is
Anna New, who made a two-stroke improvement (83 to 81) and is currently 19 shots over-par.
In a tie for 14th is
Anna Simpson, who cut five strokes (86 to 81) from her score and is 23 over-par.
Looking for
its second River States Conference title in a row and the seventh in program history, Midway will return to action looking to close things out in the final round Tuesday morning.
