RICHMOND, Ind. - Midway women's golf got a taste of what lies ahead at the River States Conference Championships next week in a third-place finish at the Forest Hills Invitational on Friday.
Six of the seven squads in the field came from the RSC with St. Mary of the Woods, who brought two teams, shot a 678, one stroke better than three-time defending conference champion Indiana East. The Eagles finished with a 688.
The invitational was originally scheduled to be two-days, but was condensed into a one-day, 36-hole tournament due to weather concerns on Saturday.
Leading Midway was all-tournament selection
Maryssa Phillips, who finished in a tie for fifth with a 168. Phillips opened with an 83 before shooting an 85 in the second round.
Two shots behind Phillips was
Savannah Salchli with a 170. Salchli's first-round 82 was the best round by an Eagle player in the tournament.
Elsewhere on the card,
Kelsay Collins shot a 173,
Anna New, who competed as an individual, shot a 175,
Bree Smith shot a 179 and
Sophie Lester finished at 182.
Midway now has a little over a week to prepare for the RSC Championships, which will be held at the Glade Springs Resort in Daniels, W. Va. April 27-29.
