NOBLESVILLE, Ind. - After more than a month out of action, the Midway men's golf team had an impressive return to the links in the last match of the regular season.
The Eagles made a 13-stroke improvement from round one to round two, finishing third at the 13-team Sagamore Shootout Monday. It was the first time they were in action
since the Klash in Kentucky, which concluded on March 30.
A pair of nationally ranked teams from Indiana were the only ones to place ahead of the Eagles. No. 13 Indiana Wesleyan and No. 14 Marian both shot a 30-over par 606, 13 strokes better than 619 (+43) of Midway.
The Eagles were five strokes (311-316) behind Taylor (Ind.) going into the second round, but outshot the Trojans 303 to 311 in round two to beat them by three strokes.
Four of Midway's six golfers improved from the first round to the second, with one other shooting the same score.Â
Leading the charge was
Hayes Mason, who placed sixth with a 152 (+9).
Mason shot a one-over 73 in round two, highlighted by an eagle on the par-five third hole. Only Weston Ogden, the tournament medalist from Marian, was better than Mason in round two, shooting a three-under 69.
One shot behind Mason in a tie for seventh was
Gage Gregory, who had five birdies while shooting a 74 (+2) in round two.
Also finishing in the top-20 for Midway were
Tristan Mitchell and
Jack Bedell. Mitchell tied for 15th with a 156 (+13) while Bedell was two strokes behind him in a tie for 19th.
Elsewhere,
Benjamin Spencer tied for 63rd with a 175 (+31) and
Hunter Graham tied for 66th with a 179 (+35).
Midway also came in well ahead of River States opponents Indiana East (eighth, 652), Saint Mary of the Woods (10th, 661) and Indiana Kokomo (T-12th, 673)
Next up is the River States Conference Championships, which will be held in Daniels, W. Va. May 4-6. The Eagles won three straight RSC titles from 2021-23 before finishing fifth a season ago.
