RIO GRANDE, Ohio - Behind a runner-up effort by
Josiah Kocis, who came achingly close to securing a national berth in the 10,000-meter run, the Midway men's track and field team landed in fifth place on day one of the River States Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships Friday.
The Eagles were all-conference in three events and scored in seven to record 37 points. Rio Grande was well out in front of the field with 102 points with Indiana East in second with 65.
Kocis finished second in the 10,000 in 30:58.69, behind only Rio's Tyler Jenkins, who ran a 30:48.84. Despite the great finish, the day also brought some disappointment for Kocis, who missed the NAIA Outdoor qualifying 'B' standard by just 0.69 seconds.
He did, however, break the school record in the event on a day where he earned another all-conference finish in the 4x800 relay. He teamed with
Carson Milner,
Connor Messer and
Steven Meyer for a third-place run of 7:55, also a school record.
Joining them on the All-RSC team was
Austin Ratliff, who placed third with a jump of 4.10 meters in the pole vault.
Elsewhere in the top-five for the Eagles were
Raush Gill, who was fourth in hammer throw at 49.67 meters, and
Brayden Carson, who was fifth in high jump at 1.85.
Other scorers were
Harry Van Why IV in long jump (sixth, 6.25), Gill in javelin (seventh, 40.15) and
DJ Cayton in hammer (47.31)
The second and final day of the River States Outdoor Championships begins tomorrow at 11 a.m.
