MIDWAY, Ky. - A battle of two teams receiving votes in the NAIA national polls didn't quite go Midway's way, as the Eagles fell two shots short of winning the Tennessee Wesleyan Fall Classic.
Midway entered Sunday's second day two shots ahead of Bethel (Tenn.) and carried that lead into the back nine, but the Wildcats closed strong to record a two-day, 52-over par score of 628, two shots better than Midway. The two teams were well ahead of the field, as third-place Tennessee Wesleyan recorded a 664 (+88).
The Eagles also missed medalist honors by one stroke, as
Kasey Cameron finished in a three-way tie for second with a five-over score of 149. Maisie Hassall of Tennessee Wesleyan took the win at 148.
Cameron was lights out through 30 holes recording seven birdies and shooting two-under par.
Six shot behind Cameron in fifth was
Anna New, who had a very good Sunday to close with a 155 (+11). New improved by three strokes in the second round with a 76, highlighted by an eagle on the par-six ninth hole.
Both Cameron and New made the all-tournament team.
Two of the five players in a tie for 13th were
Savannah Salchli and
Kelsay Collins, who were 23-over at 167. Salcli made a seven-stroke improvement Sunday, dropping from 87 to 80.
One stroke behind then in 18th was
Haley Rice, who improved four strokes in the second round, where she shot an 82 (+10). Rice finished the tournament with a 168 (+24).
Playing as an individual,
Kyrie Dickenson tied for 22nd with a 28-over par 172.
Despite falling just short on the leaderboard, head coach
Otis Smith said his team made a "big improvement from the first two tournaments" of the season and hopes it will provide a boost going into the River States Conference Fall Preview.
The Fal Preview, which Midway has won five years in a row, will be held at the Glade Springs Resort in Daniels, W. Va. Oct. 6-7.
