OWENSBORO, Ky. - For the second game in a row, Midway women's basketball got a key River States Conference road win thanks to a big fourth quarter comeback.
On Saturday, the Eagles nearly equaled their previous three quarters of offensive work in the final 10 minutes, outscoring Brescia 28-16 in the fourth period to steal a 61-53 win in Owensboro.
The first 30 minutes of action proved to be a rock fight, as the Eagles trailed 37-33 despite holding the Bearcats to just 22 percent from the floor.
But the Midway offense, itself hitting just 30 percent of its field goal tries in the first three periods, came to life, shooting 50 percent (9-of-18) while making three clutch 3-pointers down the stretch in the fourth quarter.
Trailing 45-42, the Eagles tied the game on a
Jermyra Christian triple off a
Morgan Cross offensive rebound with 4:20 remaining. Then, following a defensive stop,
A'Lyrica Hughes got an open 3-point look and converted to give Midway a 48-45 lead.
The teams traded baskets before another Christian second-chance 3-pointer essentially iced the game, as her attempt went in just before the shot clock expired, putting the Eagles ahead 55-49 with 38 seconds remaining.
Hughes had an excellent, all-around game with 15 points, eight rebounds and four steals, all team highs. Christian and Cross were in double figures as well, scoring 13 and 12 respectively.
Despite the offensive struggles and being out-rebounded 54-34, the Eagles were able to win with a swarming defense that forced 24 turnovers, which led to 23 points.Â
They were particularly stingy in the second period. After the Bearcats jumped ahead 16-7 after one, Midway held them to 2-of-11 shooting with 10 turnovers to take a 22-21 lead at the half.
The Eagles had a similar comeback on Tuesday, outscoring Indiana East 30-15 in the fourth quarter
to win 83-75 on the road. They also avenged a season-ending, 86-73 loss at Brescia in the RSC Tournament quarterfinals last season.
Now 11-5 overall, Midway survived a rough, four-game run of road games to open conference play 2-2 and will play its next three River States contests at home. That stretch starts with a 6 p.m. game against Kentucky Christian on Tuesday.
