Fourth-quarter rally lifts Midway women to first conference win

RICHMOND, Ind. - A year after a fourth-quarter implosion resulted in a loss at Indiana East, the Midway women's basketball team flipped its fortune in a return trip to Richmond on Tuesday.

The Eagles outscored the Red Wolves 30-15 in the final 10 minutes to secure their first River States Conference win by the final of 83-75.

Down 60-53 entering the final period, the Eagles took control right away with with a 10-0 run, with six of those points coming from on Alexis Taylor layups. That was the start of a dominant quarter for Taylor, who scored 12 of her 16 points in the final period.

The lead would change hands four more times before another Taylor layup put Midway up for good, 69-67 with 4:12 remaining. From there, the Eagles sealed things at the free throw line, where they made 18 of a whopping 23 attempts in the fourth quarter.

While Taylor proved a great closer, she got plenty of help as five Eagles scored in double figures.

The standout of that group was Morgan Cross, who put up an 18-point, 10-rebound double-double in 32 minutes. Both totals were career-highs for Cross, who after playing in just nine games a season ago, has scored in double figures on five occasions this year.

Elsewhere, Alexys Moore scored 15, A'Lyrica Hughes had 12 and Jacie Chesser scored 10. Jermyra Chrsitian added four steals for the Eagles, who forced 16 IU East turnovers to improve to 10-5 overall and 1-2 in conference play.

Tuesday was a nice turnaround from a game at IU East last February, in which the Eagles let an 18-point second-half lead slip away in a 76-73 loss.

It was also a nice bounce back from a tough loss to defending River States regular season champion Shawnee State on Saturday, in which Midway gave up a 10-0 late run in a 71-67 defeat.

Having already played road games against the teams predicted to finish 1-2 in the RSC preseason coaches poll, the Eagles will now travel to face projected team No. 3 on Saturday with a trip to Brescia. The Bearcats are 12-3 overall, 3-0 in conference play and on an eight-game win streak.
