Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's basketball wins fourth straight, knocks off defending RSC champ SMWC

MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway men's basketball continued its upward trajectory, pulling away for an impressive 88-80 win over defending River States Conference champion Saint Mary of the Woods at Marshall Gymnasium Saturday.

Down 37-36 at halftime, the Eagles, fresh off of the second-best single-game shooting performance in program history, shot 51.4 percent in the second half and took the lead for good on a Sam Parrish 3-pointer with 13:39 to play, giving them a 54-51 lead.

Parrish led all players with 20 points in a great follow-up performance to his 27-point showing in a win over Kentucky Christian Tuesday.

Saturday marked the second game in a row all five Midway starters scored in double figures. Dontavius King scored 17 points, Decoreio Smith 15, Maurice Washington Williams 12 and Amari Wales 11.

That starting unit played a big role in what proved to be the clinching run. With the Eagles clinging to a 67-66 lead with just over 8 minutes to play, King hit with a jumper that started a 10-0 run, with eight of the points in that time coming from the starters.

Turnovers played a key role as well, as the Eagles forced 20 while giving the ball away just seven times. Smith and Parrish both had three steals.

Washington Williams had a team-best seven rebounds for the Eagles, which had a 20-17 rebounding edge in the second half after the Pomeroys out-rebounded them 27-13 in the first.

Midway is now 7-9 overall and has won four-consecutive River States games to improve to 4-2 in league play.

The four-game RSC win streak is just shy of the program record. The Eagles won five-consecutive conference games from Jan. 18-30, 2022.

They'll have a chance to equal that mark on Tuesday when they host West Virginia Tech (5-11, 2-4) at 7:30 p.m.
