Women's basketball routs OCU in tune-up for top-10 opponent

MIDWAY, Ky. - With one of its bigger games in recent memory next up on the schedule, the Midway women's basketball team avoided falling in a trap, jumping all over Oakland City in a 93-49 River States Conference road win on Friday afternoon.

In a game that was moved up a day due to impending bad weather, the Eagles scored on their opening possession and never let up, running their lead to 17-2 halfway through the first period on a Jermyra Christian 3-pointer.

Midway shot 65 percent from the field and scored 28 points off of 18 Mighty Oak turnovers in the first half , building up a 55-13 lead which allowed the starters to rest for the majority of the final two quarters.

It was another game of great balance for the Eagles, as 16 players scored, but only Jacie Chesser, who had 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting, cracked double figures.

Lauren Walton added nine points off the bench to lead a second unit that outscored OCU 40-6.

Maddie Nipper and Jenna Phelps both had five rebounds while A'Lyrica Hughes made three steals for the Eagles, who with their sixth win in a row, improve to 15-5 overall and 6-2 in the RSC.

That win streak will be tested mightily on Tuesday, with a visit from Rio Grande (Ohio), the NAIA's eighth-ranked team.

The Eagles nearly upset the Red Storm on the road in December, getting a good look at a buzzer-beating shot that, unfortunately, rimmed off in a 67-66 loss.

Tuesday's game, weather permitting, will tip at 6 p.m.
