BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Midway's
Trinity Gottler narrowly missed snagging an automatic berth in the NAIA Women's Wrestling National Championships, as she led Midway in its first ever trip to the Mid-South Championships on Friday.
The Eagles, who had just two wrestlers compete, came away in 10th place in the 13-team field with 14 points. Life (Ga.), the No. 1 team in the country, won handily with 211.5, with Indiana Tech in second at 164.
Gottler finished fifth overall in the 160-pound weight class with a 4-2 record. This included a 6-0 win over Jazymye Lake of Rochester Christian (Mich.), a 10-0 tech fall over Clare Avery of Campbellsville, and decisions over Rochester's Aleah Swilley (2-0) and the University of the Cumberlands' Sierra Mefford (8-6).
Gottler and Mefford would square off twice, however, with Mefford getting a 3-2 decision in a True-4th Place match. This earned Mefford the fourth and final automatic national berth in the weight class.
This isn't necessarily the end of the road for Gottler, though, as head coach Cole Smith says she's been put up for an at-large national bid. Selections will be announced next week.
Also competing at 145 pounds,
Kaily Bussard compiled a record of 1-2. Her win came via a pinfall over Brilynn Gemmer of Georgetown.
