LEXINGTON, Ky. -- After sweeping Friday's doubleheader to open the series, the Midway baseball team completed its first series sweep of the season Saturday with another twinbill sweep of Siena Heights (Mich.) at Legends Field.
In Saturday's opener, the Eagles fell behind early but battled back with a pair of crooked numbers to earn an 11-6 victory. In the nightcap, Midway scored four unanswered runs en route to a 7-3 win.
Following the sweep,
Luther Bramblett's squad has won six straight and is off to its best start in program history at 8-3. Midway is scheduled for a midweek matchup with Campbellsville (Ky.) before opening River States Conference play next weekend against Brescia (Ky.).
GAME ONE: Midway 11, Siena Heights 6
Midway struck first with a run in the opening inning on an RBI single by
Colt Whaley, but the lead was short-lived as the Saints (0-7) answered with four runs in the second. Trailing 4-1, the Eagles responded with four runs on three hits in the bottom half of the inning.
With two out and runners on first and second,
Pedro Morales stepped to the dish and delivered a three-run home run down the right field line. Whaley then made it back-to-back homers with a solo shot to left field. For both Morales and Whaley, it was their first homers of the season.
After allowing four runs in the second,
Tyler Pyles,
the reigning RSC Pitcher of the Week, settled in and threw four scoreless innings. The southpaw improved to 3-0 on the season, pitching six innings and allowing four runs on five hits while striking out nine.
Midway's offense added two runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth.
Sodai Takanaga drove in a run with a groundout, and
Noah Atherholt followed with an RBI single in the fifth. In the sixth,
Taylor Voorhees delivered a two-run single before
Isaac Tencza added a sacrifice fly.
GAME TWO: Midway 7, Siena Heights 3
The Saints scored first with a run on two hits in the opening frame, but Midway answered with one run in the first and two more in the second. Morales drove in the first run with an RBI single to right-center, and Takanaga added a two-run single up the middle in the second.
Nathan McKissick ran into trouble again in the third, allowing two runs on three hits, but he settled down afterward. The right-hander retired 10 straight batters, including three consecutive 1-2-3 innings to end his outing.
After being held scoreless for a couple of innings, Midway's offense got going again in the fifth and sixth, scoring one and three runs, respectively. Takanaga had an RBI single in the fifth, while
Scott Kendrick and
Max Jewusiak added RBIs in the sixth.
McKissick (1-1) earned the win for the Eagles, tossing six innings and allowing three runs on six hits. Fellow right-hander
Brenden Cole pitched a scoreless seventh to secure the 7-3 victory.
