GRAYSON, Ky. - A familiar source rose to the occasion to help Midway softball salvage a doubleheader split on the road against River States Conference opponent Kentucky Christian Tuesday.
The Eagle offense sputtered in a 3-1 loss in the opener, before a three-run fourth inning proved to be the difference in game two, a 6-5 Midway win.
GAME ONE: KENTUCKY CHRISTIAN 3, MIDWAY 1
The Eagles fell in a 3-0 hole before getting a run across in the fifth inning, when
Ella Baum scored on a
Peyton Henderson groundout.
They would muster singles by
Randi Delong and Henderson in the final two at-bats, but neither would advance beyond first base.
Starter Ali Jones was effective in defeat, scattering six runs with three walks and four strikeouts.
GAME TWO: MIDWAY 6, KENTUCKY CHRISTIAN 5
A three-run lead after the first inning didn't hold for long, as the Knights responded with a run in the second before platting four in the third to pull ahead 5-3.
But the Eagle offense responded in a big way with five hits in the fourth inning. They tied the score on RBIs by
Jayden Timmermans (single) and
Madison Hill (ground out), which allowed for more heroics from Delong.
A week after the sophomore first baseman had three hits that were
either of the walk-off or
game-tying variety, she came up big again, singling home Timmermans for the go-ahead run.
Midway wouldn't score again, but it wouldn't need to thanks to a strong closeout performance by
Breanna Beach, who allowed just two base runners in the last four innings, both of them on errors.
Beach struck out a season-high four batters while Delong and
Molly Wooldridge both had two hits for 8-20 Midway, which is 3-1 in its last four games, all three wins by the final of 6-5.
Now 7-13 in the RSC, the Eagles will attempt to increase their chances to make the conference tournament with a road doubleheader against West Virginia Tech, which begins at noon Saturday.
Midway swept a previous doubleheader against the Golden Bears on March 8.
