OXFORD, Ohio — Midway men's soccer swept the River States Conference Player of the Week honors as Saleh Ekuchi and Landon Sorrell represented the Eagles, the league announced Monday.
Ekuchi earned the honor after helping Midway to a perfect 3-0 week. The Louisville, Kentucky, native recorded three goals, three assists and two game-winning goals during the award period.
Ekuchi scored twice in Friday's 3-2 victory over Bryan (Tenn.). He opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 57th minute before providing the eventual game-winner in the 71st. After receiving a loose ball, Ekuchi carried it 68 yards himself before sliding his shot past the goalkeeper to give Midway a 3-0 advantage.
The senior came through again Sunday against Governors State. With the game tied at one late in the second half, Ekuchi beat his defender before tucking a shot inside the back post in the 88th minute to secure the Eagles' 2-1 victory.
Sorrell earned his honor after going 2-0 and recording eight saves across 180 minutes in net. The senior allowed just two goals in his two appearances while helping the Eagles pick up victories over Transylvania and Governors State.
Against Transylvania, Sorrell made saves helping lead Midway to a 2-1 victory.
Sorrell followed that performance with another key effort against Governors State. With the game tied at one midway through the second half, he made a point-blank save on an attempt headed toward the top corner to keep the contest level. The Eagles eventually capitalized when Ekuchi scored the game-winner in the 88th minute.
The Eagles are back in action Friday, Sept. 25, when they host Cincinnati-Clermont at 1 p.m. at Midway Turf Field. The contest will be Midway's final non-conference game before the start of River States Conference play.
