Turnovers Doom Eagles in 61-57 Loss to U. Cumberlands

Despite a 15-point lead at halftime, Eagles fall to UC for the second time this season.

(Midway, Ky.) - The afternoon got off to a good start for Midway College as the Eagles sprinted to an early lead over in-state rival University of the Cumberlands. McKinzie Laswell (SR/Paoli, Ind.) came out with a hot hand, scoring 13 points in the first half and helping the Eagles stretch the lead to 36-21 by halftime.

Despite the large lead, Midway faltered in the second half. Cumberlands came out of the locker room looking for redemption and found it by capitalizing on the Eagles' 15 turnovers and 12 fouls in the second 20 minutes to come roaring back for a 61-57 victory. The Eagles refused to give up late in the game, continuing to score through the last minute of play. Unfortunately for Midway, a three-pointer by UC's Jovanna Stojanovic with 19 seconds to go iced the victory for the Patriots.

Although her team lost, Me'Lisa Martinez (SR/Nashville, TN) put in a strong performance, scoring 21 points and grabbing five rebounds. She was the leading scorer in the game and scored over 20 points for the third time this season. McKinzie Laswell also displayed her offensive prowess, knocking in 14 points on the afternoon.

After the game, Head Coach Daniel Price said that there was plenty for his team to be proud of, but that this game would serve as a learning experience. "We played incredible defense and scored at will in the first half. The second half, though, showed that there is room for improvement. We'll get back in the gym and work on our ball handling and be ready to go for the next game."

Midway College is now 3-7 on the season and will travel to St. Catharine College for an 8 p.m. game on December 8.
