McDermott, Ohio – After finishing up the River States Conference Fall Preview a few days ago, the Midway University men's golf team returned to the links today in McDermott, Ohio for the first round of the Shawnee State University Invitational at Elks Country Club.
The Eagles sit in third place overall after shooting a 306 in the opening round. They lead RSC foes, West Virginia Tech by one shot, Indiana East by three shots and Ohio Christian by 13 strokes. Midway finished behind each of them in the RSC Fall Preview.
Mid-South Conference member, Campbellsville (Ky.) leads the field after finishing with a 287 in the first round. The Eagles trail Pikeville (Ky.), who sit in second place, by four strokes.
The Eagles were paced by senior, Cole Ballard (Bardstown, Ky.) in the first round. Ballard finished with a 75 as he trails the leader by seven strokes heading into the second round.
Nipping at the heels of his teammate was Logan Medley (Lebanon, Ky.). The junior fired a 76 as he trails the leader by eight shots entering Monday's round.
Rounding out the scoring for the Eagles were Austin Mitchell (Louisville, Ky.) and Granville Hayes (Lawrenceburg, Ky.). Mitchell carded a 77 in his first round, while Hayes finished one shot behind his teammate with a 78.
Up next for Midway was the sophomore duo of Brandon Cambron (Louisville, Ky.) and Luke Mattingly (Springfield, Ky.). Cambron tied Hayes as he also finished with a 78 as Mattingly carded an 83 in the opening 18-holes.
Andrew Chambers (Bardstown, Ky.) and Justin Graham (Louisville, Ky.) were the final two Eagles in action. The duo each finished their first rounds with an 84.
The Eagles will look to cut into the deficit when the second round begins on Monday morning.
