Berea, Ky. – The Midway University volleyball team took a break from River States Conference play on Tuesday when they traveled to NCAA D-III, Berea (Ky.).
The Eagles (7-17) put an end to their four game skid as they defeated the Mountaineers (4-15) in straight sets, 3-0 (25-23, 25-21 and 25-21). The win also gives the Eagles the season sweep over Berea.
In the opening set, the Mountaineers held a 21-18 advantage, but Midway battled back scoring seven of the game's final nine points to win the set 25-23.
In both the second and third sets, the two teams battled to a tie at 21 apiece late in the set. On both occasions it was the Eagles that won both sets by a final score of 25-21.
Leading the way on offense was junior, Ricky Bowers (Long Beach, Calif.). Bowers finished with 10 kills in 24 swings for a .333 hitting clip. She also added one solo block and three block assists.
The duo of Breanna Baldwin (Yorktown, Ind.) and Emmalee Fleener (Louisville, Ky.) each finished with seven kills apiece.
Courtney George (Louisville, Ky.) spent most of the time running the offense, but Molly O'Bryan (Cox's Creek, Ky.) also got some time. George finished with 21 assists, while O'Bryan added 10.
Hannah Payne (Louisville, Ky.) paced the Eagles on defense finishing with 17 digs. Fleener and Ashley Sherrard (Louisville, Ky.) also pitched in on defense with 13 and 12 digs, respectively.
Midway is back in action this Thursday when they travel to Brescia (Ky.) for a River States Conference match.
