Wilmore, Ky. – The Midway University women's basketball team picked up their second win of the season on Saturday afternoon when they defeated Central Christian (Mo.) in the final game Zweifel/Pritchett Classic at Asbury (Ky.).
Slow starts had plagued the Eagles in their last three games, but this time around they turned the tables and got off to a quick start. Midway (2-3) jumped out to a 27-11 lead at the end of the first period and never looked back as they defeated the Saints 103-46.
The Eagles were firing on all cylinders from behind the arc as they knocked down 17 triples in 36 attempts for 47.2 percent. They torched the nets shooting 50.6 percent (41-81) from the floor.
The Midway defense forced the Saints (0-3) into 30 turnovers as they held Central Christian to a 32.7 shooting percentage (19-58) for the game. The Saints couldn't match the Eagles' sharp shooting from the trey as they hit 6-of-15 for 40 percent.
The Eagles trailed 5-4 in the early going, but they went on a 23-5 run to take a 27-11 lead after the first period.
They continued to build on their lead in the second stanza where they outscored the Saints 31-6 en route to a 58-17 advantage heading into the locker room.
Midway opened the third frame on a 14-0 run as they continued to dominate the second half to come away with the 103-46 victory.
Midway got a big boost from their bench where they held a 62-17 advantage in bench scoring. The bench paid dividends as the Eagles had 15 different players crack the scoring column.
Leading the way for the Eagles was Haleigh Yazell (Paris, Ky.) who finished with 14 points off the bench. Jasmine Johnson (Liberty, Ky.) added 12 points, while Breanna Ball (Dayton, Ohio) and Courtney Pfister (Mt. Washington, Ky.) chipped in with 10 points apiece.
The duo of Rachel Carter (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) and Patrice Tonge (Lebanon, Ky.) helped the Eagles win the rebounding battle, 48-35, by grabbing seven boards each.
Midway will look to build on their momentum when they return to the hardwood on Tuesday, November 15, when they travel to Miami Middletown (Ohio).
