Cambron tied for first, Eagles in second after round one at UK

Lexington, Ky. – The Midway University men's golf team returned to the course on Monday morning when they teed off in the friendly confines of the University Club of Kentucky as they hosted the Midway University Spring Invitational.

It was a tough day on the course for the eight team field as they faced a steady wind of 25-30 miles per hour throughout the round. The average score of the 46 golfers was an 85.96.

Despite the tough conditions, the Eagles sit in second place after shooting a 317. They trail the leader, Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.) by 10 strokes who shot a 307 on Monday. Midway leads fellow River States Conference member, Asbury (Ky.) by seven strokes entering Tuesday.

The Eagles were led by sophomore, Brandon Cambron, who sits in a tie for first place. The Louisville, Ky. native was joined by three other golfers who shot a 4-over, 76.

Finishing three shots behind Cambron was the duo of Granville Hayes (Lawrenceburg, Ky.) and Logan Medley (Lebanon, Ky.). Hayes and Medley sit in a tie for eighth place after shooting a 7-over, 79.

Rounding the scores for the Midway 'A' team was Josh Koester (Louisville, Ky.) and Austin Mitchell (Louisville, Ky.). Koester finished with an 83, while Mitchell shot a 90.

The Midway 'B' team sits in eighth place after they finished with a total score of 359. They trail Ohio Christian University by seven shots entering the round on Tuesday.

Senior, NeShaun Gordon (Vine Grove, Ky.) led the way for Midway's 'B' team as he shot a 10-over 82 in the opening round.

Freshman, Justin Graham (Louisville, Ky.) and senior, Andrew Chambers (Bardstown, Ky.) were also in action for Midway. The duo finished with an 88 and a 94, respectively.

Rounding out the scores for the Eagles was the freshman duo of Luke Mattingly (Springfield, Ky.) and Donald Luke Birkes (Winchester, Ky.). Mattingly finished one shot back of Chambers with a 95, while Birkes shot a 116.

The Eagles will wrap up their final tournament before the River States Conference Championship on Tuesday when they play the second round at the University Club of Kentucky.
