WVU Tech slips past Eagles behind strong fourth quarter

Beckley, W. Va. -- The Midway University women's basketball team played their second game of a three-game road trip on Saturday afternoon when they traveled to Beckley, West Virginia to take on West Virginia Tech.

The Eagles (10-10, 4-6 RSC) took a 51-50 lead into the fourth and final period, but couldn't hang on as the Golden Bears (11-10, 6-3 RSC) outscored the visitors 22-14 in the fourth quarter en route to the 72-65 victory.

The first half was a back and forth battle where WVU Tech controlled the first quarter, but Midway battled back in the second quarter to take a 34-33 lead into the locker room.

The third quarter showcased much of the same from the first half, but it was the Eagles who took a 51-50 lead into the fourth quarter after Patrice Tonge (Lebanon, Ky.) scored the final seven points of the third for Midway.

The fourth frame saw Midway shoot just 3-of-13 from the floor and 0-of-6 from the three-point line as WVU Tech shot 50 percent overall en route to picking up the 72-65 win over the Eagles.

Midway had three players hit double figures led by Haleigh Yazell (Paris, Ky.) with 21 points in 24 minutes of play. Patrice Tonge and Courtney Pfister (Mt. Washington, Ky.) tossed in 15 and 12 points, respectively, while both pulled down seven boards.

It was a tough game offensively with neither team shooting 40 percent. WVU Tech held the edge shooting 39.4 percent (26-66) compared to 35.4 percent (23-65) from the Eagles. Tech also hit 9-of-20 (45 percent) from long distance, while Midway hit just 4-of-20 for 20 percent.

John Kenger's team will look to put an end to their two-game skid on Thursday, January 20, when they take on Indiana University East in Richmond, Indiana. The Red Wolves are currently receiving votes in the NAIA DII Coaches' Poll.
