VERSAILLES, Ky. -- The Midway University baseball team began their sixth River States Conference series of the season on Thursday night when they hosted Brescia (Ky.) in the series opener of the three game set at Chandler Field.
The Midway offense struggled to solve the Brescia pitchers as they scored just two runs on five hits, while the Bearcats (8-23, 7-9 RSC) plated three runs on seven hits en route to the 3-2 victory.
The Bearcats jumped on Midway starter, Brandon Aoki (Camarillo, Calif.) early with two runs on two hits in the opening frame. Midway (17-16, 10-5 RSC), however, dialed up an answer with single runs in the bottom of the first and second innings to tie the game at 2-2.
Layne Peavler (Harrodsburg, Ky.) reached on a walk to open the inning. The junior then swiped second and moved to third on a ground out by Kurt Paldino (Overland Park, Kans.). Peavler ended up scoring on a wild pitch by Tanner Tow.
Then in the second, Danny Maguire (Dana Point, Calif.) singled, Koy Lindsey (Sonora, Ky.) walked and Matthew Olson (Louisville, Ky.) reached on an error to load the bases with nobody out.
The next batter, Zach Lampreia (Toronto, Canada) ripped a single to score Maguire from third and tie the game up. It looked like Midway was going to take the lead as they had the bases loaded with no one out, but Brescia got three straight outs to keep the game tied at 2-2.
The tie game wouldn't last long as the Bearcats would score an unearned run off Aoki in the top of the third to regain the 3-2 advantage.
Midway's best chance to score for the rest of the game came in the eighth inning when they had the bases loaded with two outs, but couldn't get the hit when they needed it as Hunter Kloke pitched a perfect 1-2-3 inning in the ninth to seal the 3-2 victory.
Aoki pitched well, but couldn't get any help from his offense. The junior would ultimately be dealt with the loss after allowing three runs – two earned – on seven hits. It was his longest outing of the season as he tossed a complete game throwing 104 pitches.
Zach Lampreia, Koy Lindsey, Danny Maguire, Kurt Paldino and Barrett Croslin accounted for Midway's five hits. Lampreia collected Midway's only RBI in the contest.
Midway struggled to figure out the Bearcat duo of Tanner Tow and Hunter Kloke. Tow took home the win after allowing just two runs on five hits in 7.1 innings. Kloke recorded the save after tossing 1.2 perfect innings.
The two teams will wrap up their series with a doubleheader on Friday starting at noon ET at Chandler Field.
