MIDWAY, Ky. -- After putting together one of the most dominant pitching seasons in program history,
Tyler Pyles has been named an NAIA Second Team All-American, becoming the first All-American selection in Midway baseball history.
Pyles was one of 58 players to earn All-American recognition from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
Pyles, who was primarily used as a relief pitcher in his first three seasons at Midway, quickly established himself as one of the top pitchers in both the River States Conference and the NAIA after transitioning to a full-time starting pitcher this season.
The junior from Prospect, Ky. finished the season with an 8-1 record in 13 starts and posted a 2.00 earned run average across 76.2 innings pitched.
His eight victories ranked second in the River States Conference and tied for 40th nationally, while his 2.00 ERA led the RSC and was good enough for sixth in the NAIA. Pyles also ranked third in the league in innings pitched, while he limited opponents to a .175 batting average.
The southpaw proved to be one of the premier strikeout pitchers in the conference throughout the season. He fanned 92 batters, leading the RSC and ranking tied for 23rd nationally. He also paced the conference with 10.80 strikeouts per nine innings which ranked tied for 34th in the NAIA.
The All-American recognition comes following a season that saw Pyles earn River States Conference Pitcher of the Year honors and First Team All-River States Conference honors. He also was named to the River States Conference Gold Glove Team as a starting pitcher.
As part of his memorable season, Pyles' impact on the Midway baseball record book may be just as impressive.
His 2.00 ERA established a new single-season program record, while his eight wins tied for the most in a single season. His 92 strikeouts rank second in program history for a single season, while his 76.2 innings pitched are tied for the second-most in a season.
Pyles also leaves his mark on several career records. He finished seventh in program history in appearances (44) and innings pitched (117.2), while ranking fourth in both wins (9) and strikeouts (152).
The All-American honor caps one of the finest seasons ever by a Midway pitcher and adds another historic milestone to a career that will be remembered among the best in program history.
