MIDWAY, Ky. -- After winning their regular season finale on Saturday, February 16, the Midway University women's basketball team clinched a spot in the River States Conference Women's Basketball Tournament which begins tonight.
The Eagles enter the tournament as the No. 4 seed from the West Division as they take on the top-seed from the East Division, West Virginia Tech. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. ET tonight in Beckley, West Virginia. Live stats and live video will be provided in the links above.
Midway earned their spot in the tournament after defeating Asbury University (Ky.) on Senior Day by a final score of 69-59. In that game, the Eagles trailed late in the third quarter, but outscored the visitors 23-9 in the fourth en route to the win.
In his first season at the helm, Alan Foster, has led his team to a 16-13 record overall and a 9-9 mark in River States Conference play.
The Golden Bears – who are receiving votes in the latest NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Coaches' Poll – earned the regular season title and an automatic berth to the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Tournament after finishing the season with a 21-9 mark overall and a 16-1 record in league play.
West Virginia Tech won the regular season matchup earlier this year on January 19 when they defeated the Eagles 82-73 inside Marshall Gymnasium.
In their regular season matchup, the Golden Bears took 35-32 lead into the locker room, but the Eagles outscored the visitors 23-18 in the third taking a 55-53 lead into the fourth quarter. West Virginia Tech, however, outscored the Eagles 29-18 in the fourth to slip away with the win.
Jill Enix (Pineville, Ky.) and Haleigh Yazell (Paris, Ky.) led the way for the Eagles that day scoring 18 points each. Enix went 7-of-11 from the floor, while Yazell hit 5-of-9 from long distance. Madison Jones (Walton, Ky.) also chipped in 10 points in the loss.
The Eagles struggled to slow down Laura Requenna that day as she had her way in the post finishing with 28 points and 17 rebounds. Brittney Justice added 12 points and 12 boards, Alexandria Gray added 10 points including some clutch 3's down the stretch.
