LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The Midway University women's tennis team opened River States Conference play on Friday afternoon when they hosted Indiana University Southeast at Lexington Tennis Club in nearby Lexington, Kentucky.
The Grenadiers swept all three doubles matches taking a 3-0 lead into singles play where they won four of the six singles matches en route to the 7-2 victory as it was the conference opener for both squads.
Midway – who fell to 6-7 overall and 0-1 in conference play with the loss – got on the board with wins at No. 6 and No. 3 singles.
The first win came at No. 6 singles where Jilian Verbrugghe won in straight sets. The sophomore from Macomb, Michigan collected 6-1, 6-4 victory over Emily Mitchell to put the home team on the board.
Then at No. 3 singles, Carly Poste battled back from a set down. The freshman from Las Vegas, Nevada dropped the first to Anne Marie Mattox, but battled back winning the second set handily 6-1. Poste then won the tiebreaker in the third set for the win to make it 7-2.
The Eagles will have the next few days off as they return to action on Saturday (March 23) when they host Indiana University East at Lexington Tennis Club.
