Box Score CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Earlier this season on February 19 in their fifth official match, the Midway men's volleyball team dropped a five-set heartbreaker to Cincinnati Christian (Ohio), but on Tuesday, they avenged that loss with convincing win over CCU.
The Eagles posted 42 kills and a .247 hitting percentage on Wednesday night as they collected a 3-0 victory (25-17, 25-22, 25-18) over Cincinnati Christian.
The offensive numbers are similar to their earlier meeting, but this time around the Eagles were more efficient. In five sets earlier this year, Midway had 49 kills and hit .232, but this time around in three sets, the visitors had 42 kills and a .247 hitting clip.
Jonea Rima's ball club also cut back on their errors. In their first meeting, Midway committed 22 service errors and had 13 reception errors, but this time around, the Eagles had just four service errors and seven reception errors – a difference of 24 free points handed to CCU.
Trailing 11-8 in the opening set, the Eagles went on a 10-2 run behind two kills from Victor Pietro (Gloria de Dourados, Brazil) and an ace from Kyle West (Dry Ridge, Ky.). The five-point cushion would be more than enough as Midway won the first set 25-17.
The second stanza was close throughout as Midway scored the final three points for the 25-22 victory before winning the third set handily.
In the third, the Eagles soared to a 22-13 lead behind five kills from Pietro. Cincinnati Christian (1-22, 1-12 MSC) cut the deficit to 24-18, but another kill from Pietro sealed the 25-18 victory and the clean sweep for Midway.
Victor Pietro led the way offensively for the Eagles. The freshman posted a career-high 30 kills committing just nine miscues in 55 swings for a .382 hitting clip. He also added seven digs in a winning effort.
Nate Martin (Pickerington, Ky.) didn't have his best, but finished with five kills and four digs, while Gavin-James Andaya (Kapolei, Hawaii) ran the show offensively. The freshman setter carded 38 digs and chalked up five digs in the win.
Midway had five players post at least four digs with Ryan Meyers (St. Louis, Mo.) had six behind Pietro's team-high seven. Freshman libero, Kyle West tallied four digs.
The Eagles – who improved to 3-10 overall and 2-9 in Mid-South Conference play following the win – will look to build a winning streak and make it two-in-a-row on Thursday when they host Thomas More (Ky.). First serve is set for 7 p.m. ET inside Marshall Gymnasium.
