MIDWAY, Ky. -- After completing one of the more successful seasons in recent memory, the Midway women's basketball team has now turned their focus to the River States Conference Tournament which gets underway on Wednesday at various campus sites in the RSC.
In their quarterfinal matchup, the Eagles – who earned the No. 2 seed from the West Division – will host Ohio Christian, the No. 3 seed from the East Division. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. ET inside Marshall Gymnasium which is located at 512 East Stephens Street in Midway.
The winner of Midway and Ohio Christian will get the winner of West Virginia Tech and IU Kokomo in the semifinals on Saturday, February 29, at a location to be determined.
ABOUT THE EAGLES
Midway will be making their fourth consecutive postseason appearance following a 22-8 mark overall. They also went 9-7 in league play which earned them a share of the West Division. The 22 wins is the most since the 2016-17 team also posted 22 victories. It's also just the third time since 2005-06 that the women's basketball program has compiled at least 20 victories.
The Eagles enter the tournament having won their final two regular season games against Welch (Tenn.) and Alice Lloyd (Ky.). Midway seemed to regain their mojo following a 95-79 win over Alice Lloyd in their regular season finale on Saturday (Feb. 22).
Six players scored in double figures led by a game-high 24 points from Leisa Butler (Spring Hill, Tenn.). Jill Enix (Pineville, Ky.) added 21 points going a perfect 11-of-11 from the foul line, while Haleigh Yazell (Paris, Ky.) chipped in 12 points and five assists. Sierra Graham (Shepherdsville, Ky.) and Allyson Callahan (Morehead, Ky.) scored 11 points apiece, while Kindall Talley (Frankfort, Ky.) added 11 points, seven assists, four rebounds and four steals.
Enix has led the way throughout the season averaging a team-high 16.8 points & 5.6 rebounds per game. Butler adds 14.2 PPG & 5.2 RPG, while Yazell also averages in double figures at 10.4 PPG. Talley (8.4 PPG & 3.8 APG), Graham (7.8 PPG) and Callahan (7.7 PPG) also play important roles for the Blue and Gold.
SCOUTING THE TRAILBLAZERS
Ohio Christian returns to the RSC Tournament for the first time since 2016-17 after missing last season the year prior. The Trailblazers finished the season with an 18-11 record overall and an 8-8 record in league play.
In their regular season finale, the Trailblazers suffered a 92-88 loss to Point Park (Pa.) on Saturday (Feb. 22). Ohio Christian went 5-5 in their last 10 games of the regular season which includes a 73-58 loss to Midway on Jan. 28 in Marshall Gymnasium.
In their 92-88 loss to Point Park, Staci Pertuset, led the way with a game-high 25 points to go with her nine rebounds. Logan Stidham added 15 points off the bench and Rachel Gillum scored 13 points, while Carolane Cox and Makayla DeArmond added 11 points apiece.
Pertuset leads the way for the Trailblazers with 20.0 points per game which also leads the River States. She also pulls down 8.3 RPG, while Gilliam averaged a double-double with 16.4 points and 10.9 rebounds per game. Helaina Limas and Cox add 13.4 & 13.1 PPG, respectively.
