Strong fourth quarter propels WVU Tech to win over Women's Basketball

MIDWAY, Ky. -- Following a come from behind win over Alice Lloyd (Ky.) a week ago, the Midway University women's basketball team put their six-game win streak on the line on Tuesday when they hosted West Virginia Tech in Marshall Gymnasium.

The Eagles found themselves in a good spot when they took a 52-50 lead into the fourth quarter, but the Golden Bears outscored the home squad 25-15 over the final 10 minutes en route to the 75-67 victory.

The Golden Bears – who improved to 5-5 on the season following the win – led throughout much of the first half as they took a 36-30 lead into the locker room. Midway held a slight advantage in the first half shooting 40 percent, while WVU Tech shot 38.9 percent.

West Virginia Tech opened the third quarter on a 6-0 run pushing their lead to its largest of the game at 42-30, but Midway rallied and outscored the visitors 22-8 over the final 7:41 of the third before taking a 52-50 lead into the final stanza.

Kindall Talley (Frankfort, Ky.) sparked the rally with a trey and a transition layup following a steal, while Jill Enix (Pineville, Ky.) added a triple of her own before Leah Shelley (LaCenter, Ky.) added a layup capping a 10-0 run that cut the deficit to 42-40.

Trailing 47-43, the Blue and Gold put together a 7-0 run that saw them take a 50-47 edge. Enix started the run with a pair of freebies and Talley kept the rally going with a triple before Jalyn Jackson (Alexandria, Ky.) capped the run by hitting a pair at the charity stripe.

After taking a 52-50 lead into the fourth, the home team failed to score for the opening 4:07 of the quarter allowing WVU Tech to build a four-point lead. A triple from Jackson cut the deficit to one, but that would be as close as they got.

The Golden Bears responded with a 9-2 run capped by a trey from Whittney Justice that pushed their lead to eight. The visitors would lead by as many as nine in the final minutes as they held on for the 75-67 victory.

Five players reached double figures led by Allyson Callahan (Morehead, Ky.) who notched a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Jill Enix added 13 points, while Jalyn Jackson and Leah Shelley chipped in 11 points each. Jackson also carded nine assists, while Shelley posted five rebounds and five blocks. Kindall Talley finished with 10 points in the loss.

Midway – who falls to 8-6 on the season – is scheduled to return to action on Friday (Jan. 29) when they host Campbellsville University-Harrodsburg (Ky.) at 5:30 p.m. ET.
