OWENSBORO, Ky. -- Having dropped their last four games, the Midway University women's soccer team snapped their four-game skid on Thursday in a River States Conference matchup in Owensboro, Ky. at Brescia (Ky.).

The Eagles – who have had their struggles thus far this season cracking the scoring column – scored one goal in the first half before putting the game on ice with a goal in the second half as they held on for the 2-0 victory.

With the win, Sherrill Smith's squad improves to 2-5 overall, while they pick up their first conference victory of the season moving to 1-3 in league play. Brescia, meanwhile, falls to 2-7 overall and 1-4 in River States Conference play.

Entering the matchup, the Eagles had scored four games on the season including just one in their four-game losing skid. In Thursday's matchup, the Bearcats held a 17-16 edge in shots, but it was the visitors who held a 13-9 advantage in shots on frame.

After each team put three shots on frame in the early going, Midway took the early 1-0 lead after Mariana Casey scored the first goal of her collegiate career. Off a pass by Madeline Hargrove (Goodlettsville, Ky.), the Georgetown, Ky. gained possession and gave her squad the early 1-0 edge.

The Eagles had chances to add to their lead and Brescia had opportunities to equalize, but neither team did so as the visitors took a 1-0 lead at intermission.

Midway continued to apply pressure early in the second half as they looked to add their 1-0 lead. They broke through and pushed the lead to 2-0 in the 64th minute courtesy of the sister duo of Marissa Sauer (Henderson, Ky.) and Maggie Sauer (Henderson, Ky.).

Maggie played a perfect thru ball as she connected with her older sister who found the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season as Midway snagged the 2-0 advantage.

The lead nearly ballooned to 3-0 just a couple of minutes later in the 66th minute, but Emma Goecker (Seymour, Ind.) had her shot deflect off the crossbar. The 2-0 lead was more than enough as Midway's defense kept a clean sheet for the 2-0 victory.

Getting her second win of the season and the second shutout of her young career was Midway netminder Yasmeen Shalash. The freshman from Nicholasville, Ky. stopped all nine shots she faced without letting the home team score.

Midway is now scheduled to return to action on Tuesday (Oct. 5) when they head to Harrodsburg, Ky. to battle Campbellsville-Harrodsburg (Ky.). Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET.
