Box Score MIDWAY, Ky. -- Following a successful first season under head coach Chris Minner, the Midway women's basketball team opened the 2021-22 season on Wednesday night (Nov. 3) when they hosted Kentucky Christian in Marshall Gymnasium.
The Eagles shot nearly 50 percent from the floor, while they forced the Knights into 32 turnovers en route to claiming the 93-80 victory to open the season on a successful note.
With the win, Midway opens the season at 1-0, while Kentucky Christian drops to 1-1 on the young season with the loss.
Midway finished the night shooting 48.6 percent (35-72) from the floor, while they hit 10-of-22 from three for 45.5 percent. The Knights, meanwhile, shot 54.7 percent (29-53), but they didn't help their cause with 32 turnovers which led to a 33-11 advantage in points off turnovers.
Kentucky Christian's 32 turnovers led to 16 steals for the Eagles. Accounting for five of those steals was Dezeree White who didn't disappoint in her debut for the Blue and Gold. A native of Houston, Texas, the junior transferred from Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) over the summer.
The 2019-20 NAIA All-American Honorable Mention led the way for the Eagles on Wednesday night scoring 29 points, while grabbing a game-high seven rebounds. She also dished out three assists to go with her five steals as she finished the night shooting 11-of-17 from the floor.
She scored eight points in the opening quarter to help propel the Eagles to a 27-20 lead entering the second quarter. The Knights battled back and tied the game at 36 with 2:24 left before half, but the home team closed the quarter on a 12-0 run.
Atlantis White (Houston, Texas), Allyson Callahan (Morehead, Ky.) and Jalyn Jackson (Cold Spring, Ky.) each hit a trey to spark the rally, while Milan Miller (Houston, Texas) converted an and-one as they took a 48-36 lead at intermission.
Following a bit of a back-and-forth third quarter, the Eagles put the game out of reach early in the fourth quarter when they pushed their lead to its largest of the game following Callahan's second triple of the game as Midway cruised to the 93-80 victory.
Dezeree White wasn't the only Eagle to finish in double figures with three others joining her in the victory. Callahan added 13 points and Jackson added 12, while Kindall Talley (Frankfort, Ky.) chipped in 10 points off the bench.
Midway is scheduled to return to action on Saturday (Nov. 6) when they host Indiana University-South Bend inside Marshall Gymnasium at 1 p.m. ET.
