Women's Soccer suffers shutout loss to Pomeroys in conference opener

Box Score

MIDWAY, Ky. -- Following a string of three non-conference games to open the season, the Midway women's soccer team kicked off River States Conference play on Thursday when they hosted St. Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.).

It was a tough opening to the game for the home team as they found themselves facing a 4-0 deficit at intermission. The Eagles held the Pomeroys scoreless in the second stanza, but they failed to find paydirt as the visitors held on for the 4-0 victory.

With the loss, Midway falls to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in league play, while St. Mary-of-the-Woods – the newcomers to the RSC – improve to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

The Pomeroys were all over the Midway defense in the opening frame as they had a shot clank off the crossbar just a minute and 24 seconds into the contest. Just over three minutes later, the crossbar couldn't save the Blue and Gold.

Kennedy Trigg took a cross from Kaylee Lowe as she finished it off giving her squad the 1-0 edge. Lowe nearly had another goal less than five minutes later, but thankfully her shot bounced off the crossbar.

Trigg – who assisted the first goal – this time took it herself after beating the Midway defense pushing the lead to 2-0.

The Pomeroys went on to score two more goals in the first half in the 30th and 34th minutes as they built a 4-0 lead at intermission. The Eagles held the visitors scoreless in the second half but failed to find paydirt themselves as St. Mary-of-the-Woods cruised to the 4-0 victory.

Midway tallied just seven shots with four coming on goal. Taylor Harley (Lawrenceburg, Ky.) recorded four shots with on goal, while Marissa Sauer (Henderson, Ky.), Mariana Casey (Georgetown, Ky.), and Unaizah Shajani (Nairobi, Kenya) each took one shot apiece.

Yasmeen Shalash (Nicholasville, Ky.) was dealt the loss allowing four goals, while making four saves. Madison Land (Chattanooga, Tenn.) played the final 7:33 in goal and didn't face a shot.

Midway is back in action on Saturday (Sept. 18) when they host IU East (Ind.) in another River States Conference matchup at 1 p.m. ET.
