COLUMBIA, Ky. -- After opening their season with a win at the IU East Invitational last week, the Midway men's golf team opened play in their second tournament of the season on Monday in Columbia, Ky. at the Blue Raider Invitational.
Despite less-than-ideal conditions throughout the day, the Eagles put together a terrific round of the golf firing a 4-over 288 to sit in second place. They trail Campbellsville (Ky.) who leads the eight-team field after carding a 6-under 278.
Golfers were scheduled to play 36-holes of the 54-hole tournament on Monday, but inclement in the second round caused a delay as golfers were unable to complete all 36-holes. Golfers will now complete the second round in the morning before playing the third round after that.
Leading the way for the Blue and Gold and leading the 47-player field is true freshman Hayes Mason – who is playing in the tournament as an individual. A native of Campbellsville, Ky., Mason fired a 3-under 68 and leads the field by one entering the final two rounds.
One of five golfers in a tie for second chasing Mason is William Molen. The fifth-year senior from Frankfort, Ky. carded a 2-under 69 in his opening 18-holes on Monday.
Sitting inside the top 15 was the duo of Elliott Smith (Shelbyville, Tenn.) and Camron Turner (Hazard, Ky.). Smith and Turner both put together great opening rounds carding scores of 72 and 73, respectively.
Sitting one shot behind Turner in a tie for 19th was Logan Conn. The fifth-year senior from Prestonsburg, Ky. fired a 3-over 74 in his opening 18-holes.
Also recording scores in the 70s on Monday was the junior duo of Chase Taylor (Winchester, Ky.) and Ethan Spalding (Lebanon, Ky.). Taylor shot a 4-over 75, while Spalding carded a 6-over 77.
Golfers will play the remainder of the second round early in the morning before wrapping up the 54-hole event later that afternoon.
