MIDWAY, Ky. -- It was announced on Monday, October 31, that Anju Sugiya of the Midway women's volleyball team had been named the River States Conference Women's Volleyball Attacker of the Week for her performance the week of Oct. 24-30.
The weekly honor is the first of the season for the Sugiya, while it is the first of her young career. She also becomes the second different Midway player to earn the Attacker of the Week honor this season, marking the third straight week the honor has gone to a Midway player.
The sophomore from Tokyo, Japan played a key role in helping lead the Eagles to a pair of conference victories over Brescia (Ky.) and IU Southeast (Ind.). She recorded 39 kills and 39 digs to average 5.57 kills and 5.57 digs per set. Sugiya also notched a .326 hitting clip on the week.
In the sweep of Brescia, Sugiya carded a double-double with 16 kills and 15 digs. She committed just three miscues in her 35 swings to finish with a .371 hitting mark.
Sugiya then closed the week by setting new career-highs with 23 kills and 24 digs in Midway's 3-1 victory over IU Southeast. She also posted a .300 attacking percentage while serving two aces in the four-set victory.
Following her performances last week, the sophomore has recorded 215 digs and 197 kills in her 20 matches this season. She's averaging 3.21 digs and 2.94 kills per set. Sugiya currently ranks 11th in the RSC in hitting percentage, 12th in kills per set, and 15th in digs per set.
After posting a 2-0 mark last week, the Midway women's volleyball team is 16-4 overall and 11-4 in River States Conference play. They'll return to action on Tuesday (Nov. 1) when they host Alice Lloyd (Ky.) in their final home match of the 2022 campaign.
