Bryan's game-winning triple dooms Eagles in one-point loss

Box Score

RIO GRANDE, Ohio -- After suffering a triple overtime loss to Cumberland (Tenn.) a day earlier, the Midway women's basketball team wrapped up play in the Bevo Francis Invitational on Saturday when they squared off with No. 14 Bryan (Tenn.).

It was a tale of two halves for the Eagles as they would take a 47-38 lead into the locker room before being outscored 28-18 in the second half. A three by Destiny Kassner with eight seconds remaining doomed the Eagles as the Lions slipped away with the 66-65 victory.

With the loss, Chris Minner's squad drops to 1-3 on the year, while the Lions improve to 2-2 on the young season following the win.

After a back-and-forth battle in the opening quarter, Midway extended their lead in the second stanza. A pair of triples by Atlantis White (Houston, Texas) and Kassidy Daugherty (Owensboro, Ky.) kickstarted a 9-2 as the Eagles took a 30-22 lead with 7:58 left in the quarter.

Bryan battled back and tied the game at 32, but the Eagles closed the quarter on a 15-6 run to take a 47-38 lead into the locker room. The opening 20 minutes saw the Eagles shoot 54.8 percent, while they hit 6-of-13 from behind the arc for 46.1 percent.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, the second half was a different story. Midway struggled to get anything going offensively in the final 20 minutes, but they still found themselves in the game late in the fourth quarter.

A free throw by Semaj Adams (New Orleans, La.) gave her team a 60-53 advantage with 5:03 left, but the Lions got within two following a quick 5-0 run. Daugherty then hit 1-of-2 at the charity stripe giving Midway a 65-63 lead with 21 seconds remaining.

Following a timeout, Bryan drew up a play that got Destiny Kassner a wide open three that found the bottom of the net with eight seconds remaining. On the ensuing possession, Dezeree White (Houston, Texas) had her shot blocked as Bryan came away with the 66-65 victory.

In the second half, Midway hit just 7-of-21 from the floor for 33.3 percent, while they went 0-of-7 from the three-point line.

Adams led the way for the Eagles with 17 points to go with her seven rebounds. Atlantis White, meanwhile, finished with 11 points in 21 minutes off the bench.

The Eagles will now prepare for River States Conference play which is set to get underway on Tuesday (Nov. 15) when they host Oakland City (Ind.) at 5:30 p.m. ET.
