Eagle punch ticket to RSC Championship Final with 3-1 upset over Pioneers

Box Score

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- For the second consecutive season, the Midway women's volleyball team is headed to the River States Conference Tournament Championship as they upset the top-seed Point Park (Pa.) on Saturday in their semifinal matchup.

The Pioneers got off to a strong start and won the opening set, but Midway came storming back erasing a six-point deficit in the second set and a seven-point deficit in the third en route to claiming the 3-1 victory (20-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-21).

With the win, Jonea Rima's club improves to 19-6 as they'll now turn their attention to tonight's championship final which will start at 6 p.m. ET in Pittsburgh. The win also avenges Midway's regular season loss to the Pioneers which came on Oct. 21.

The opening set saw Midway hold a 14-13 lead, but the Pioneers seized control following a 7-1 run as the home team took a 1-0 lead with the 25-20 win in the first set.

Point Park seemed to be in control in the second as they used a 5-0 run to take a 19-13 advantage forcing Rima to call a quick timeout. Her team responded out of the timeout and went on a tear to close the set.

A 4-0 run got Midway within two and forced the Pioneers to call a timeout. Point Park extended their lead back to three, but the Eagles closed the frame on an 8-1 run to win the set 25-21 and level the match at a set apiece.

The third frame was nearly a carbon copy of the second. This time around the Pioneers held an 18-11 lead, but Midway once again stormed back. Two kills by Aubry Koester (Apple Valley, Calif.) and a pair of service aces by Hannah Brink (Greenville, Mich.) fueled a 6-0 run as Midway pulled within one at 18-17.

Koester then stepped behind the service line and served a pair of aces before Anju Sugiya (Tokyo, Japan) put the finishing touches on the 25-20 win with a pair of kills as the Eagles held a 2-1 lead in the match.

The Eagles trailed 12-9 in the fourth, but two service aces by Mariana Rodriguez (Houston, Texas) put her team ahead for good. The Pioneers tied the set on five different occasions but a block by the duo of Koester and Brink sealed the 3-1 win with the 25-21 fourth-set victory.

The duo of Aubry Koester and Anju Sugiya led the offensive attack for the Eagles. Koester put down 18 kills and carded a .343 hitting percentage, while Sugiya had a spectacular performance with 17 kills and 17 digs.

Pilar Daugherty (Las Cruces, N.M.) and Valerie Ramos (San Juan, Puerto Rico) split time running the offense dishing out 22 and 19 assists, respectively. Mariana Rodriguez, meanwhile, led the defensive effort with 22 digs.

The win saw Midway serve a season-high 14 aces with Hannah Brink and Rodriguez each serving four apiece. Koester, meanwhile, served three in the win.

Midway now sets their sights on tonight's championship final. First serve is set for 6 p.m. ET in Pittsburgh as Midway will square off with the winner of the other semifinal match between second-seeded IU Kokomo (Ind.) and third-seeded IU East (Ind.). Live stats and live video will be available for tonight's match.
