Strong second half lifts Bears to win over Midway Women's Basketball

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- Following a couple of days off for the Thanksgiving holiday, the Midway women's basketball team returned to action on Saturday (Nov. 26) when they traveled to Pikeville (Ky.) in a non-conference matchup at Appalachian Wireless Arena.

The Eagles led by as many as 14 early in the third quarter and would take a 56-51 lead into the final period, but the Bears outscored the visitors by 10 in the final quarter en route to the 76-71 come from behind victory.

Following the loss, Chris Minner's squad falls to 2-5 overall, while Pikeville improves to 5-2 on the young season with the win.

Midway held a slim three-point lead after the opening frame, but they extended their lead after outscoring the Bears 22-13 in the second.

Amoni White (St. Louis, Mo.) opened the quarter with a layup before Kassidy Daugherty (Owensboro, Ky.) converted an 'and-one'. Aleigha Mucker (Hardinsburg, Ky.) then hit a layup, while White capped a 10-4 run with a triple that stretched the lead to nine.

After taking a 44-32 lead into the locker room, the Eagles got back-to-back layups from Semaj Adams (New Orleans, La.) and Jalyn Jackson (Cold Spring, Ky.) early in the third as they took their largest lead of the contest at 50-36 with 7:15 left in the third.

Midway then went cold as they went five minutes without a field goal. Pikeville responded with an 11-0 run before trimming the deficit to 56-51 entering the final 10 minutes.

The Bears opened the final quarter on a quick 7-0 run as they took their first lead of the contest since the opening moments of the game at 58-56 with 8:34 left. The home team then pushed their lead to five with 2:27 remaining in regulation.

A triple by Daugherty and a layup by Adams tied the game at 71, but a three-pointer from Bailey Frazier would eventually lift the Bears to the 76-71 victory. Frazier's triple was her fourth of the contest as she finished with 20 points and seven rebounds in the win.

Dezeree White (Houston, Texas) led the way for the Eagles with 20 points hitting 8-of-12 from the floor. Adams, meanwhile, recorded 19 points and six rebounds hitting 9-of-14 from the floor. Amoni White and Daugherty each carded nine points in the loss.

The Eagles are now set to return to River States Conference play on Tuesday (Nov. 29) when they host IU Kokomo (Ind.). Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. ET inside Marshall Gymnasium.
