Eagles erase 16-point deficit en route to 65-61 win over Asbury

Box Score

MIDWAY, Ky. -- Following an easy win over CU Harrodsburg (Ky.) two days earlier, the Midway women's basketball team returned to Marshall Gymnasium on Friday when they hosted Asbury (Ky.) in a non-conference matchup.

Midway trailed by as many as 16 early in the second half and would face a 13-point deficit entering the fourth quarter, but after outscoring the visitors by 17 in the final quarter, the homestanding Eagles came away with the 65-61 victory.

With the win, the Eagles push their win streak to five games improving to 7-5 on the year, while Asbury falls to 6-6 on the season.

It was a first quarter to forget for the home team as they shot just 25 percent and committed seven turnovers as they trailed 12-9 entering the second stanza.

The second quarter wasn't much better for Midway as they struggled to crack Asbury's stifling defense. Asbury – who committed just eight turnovers in the opening 20 minutes – forced the Eagles into 14 turnovers as they took a 32-22 lead into the locker room.

Midway – who trailed by as many as 16 in the third – cut the deficit to single digits, but Asbury pushed their lead back to 16 late in the quarter before taking a 52-39 lead into the final quarter.

Midway got back in the game in the fourth thanks to their effort on the defensive end. In the fourth quarter alone, the Eagles held Asbury to 21.4 percent shooting and forced 10 turnovers.

A 9-0 run capped by a Jalyn Jackson (Cold Spring, Ky.) triple cut the deficit to five less than three minutes into the quarter. Dezeree White (Houston, Texas) then got it going when her team needed her the most.

The senior guard scored six straight at one point as Midway was within one at 57-56. Trailing by three, White found an open Aleigha Mucker (Hardinsburg, Ky.) who drained the trey to tie the game at 61 with 1:44 left in regulation.

After grabbing a defensive rebound, Sereniti Webb (Covington, Ky.) was fouled and went to the charity stripe where she hit 2-of-2 giving Midway their first lead of the game. After a missed free throw, Mucker grabbed an offensive rebound and called timeout with 30 seconds left.

Coming out of the timeout, White was fouled and sank a pair of free throws to put the game on ice and seal the 65-61 victory.

White – who finished with 19 points, nine rebounds, and four steals – scored 12 points in the final stanza to help lead the Eagles to the win. Semaj Adams (New Orleans, La.), meanwhile, notched her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 boards.

For the game, the Eagles forced Asbury into 26 turnovers which led to a 25-15 edge in points off turnovers. Midway also dominated the rebounding battle 60-42 which included 29 offensive rebounds leading to a 20-0 advantage in second chance points.

The Eagles will play their final game before the Christmas Holiday on Sunday (Dec. 18) when they host Goshen (Ind.) at 2 p.m. ET inside Marshall Gymnasium.
