Box Score

MIDWAY, Ky. -- The Midway University women's basketball team punched their ticket to the River States Conference Tournament Semifinals on Wednesday following their quarterfinal victory over Ohio Christian in Marshall Gymnasium.

Ohio Christian held a brief 14-13 lead late in the first period, but Midway soon got hot taking a 45-24 lead at halftime before leading by as many as 37 in the second half as they cruised to the semifinals with an 89-55 victory.

With the win, Chris Minner's squad runs their win streak to nine as they improve to 24-6 overall on the season. Midway's 24 victories are the most in a single season dating back to before the 2003-04 season.

Midway got off to a strong start sprinting to a 6-0 lead following back-to-back layups by Allyson Callahan (Morehead, Ky.) and a coast-to-coast layup by Dezeree White (Houston, Texas). Ohio Christian answered by calling a 30 second timeout to settle down.

The Trailblazers – who finished their season with an 11-12 mark overall – came out of the timeout and went on a quick 7-0 run before trading baskets with the Blue and Gold. The next few minutes saw three ties before Midway got going and blew the game open.

Trailing 14-13 with 2:55 left in the opening stanza, the Eagles closed the quarter on a 7-0 run as they took a 20-14 lead following the opening 10 minutes.

Midway quickly extended the run to 12-0 following another layup by Callahan and a triple from Jalyn Jackson (Cold Spring, Ky.) as they pushed their lead to double figures for the first time. Not long after the 12-0 run, the home team caught fire from downtown and went on a 9-0 run.

Aleigha Mucker (Hardinsburg, Ky.), Kindall Talley (Frankfort, Ky.), and Callahan hit three straight triples on consecutive offensive trips as Midway held a 38-19. Callahan then capped an 18-point opening half with a trey in the final seconds as Midway took a 45-24 lead at intermission.

The Eagles continued to add to their lead in the third period where they outscored the visitors 21-14 to take a 66-38 lead into the final stanza. Jalyn Jackson came up big in the third frame scoring nine points while going 4-of-5 from the floor.

The opening moments of the fourth quarter saw the duo of Keia McCullogh (Nashville, Tenn.) and Dezeree White combine to go on a 9-0 run as Midway pushed their lead to its largest of the contest before eventually cruising to the 89-55 victory.

Allyson Callahan led the Eagles scoring a game-high 26 points to go with her five steals, four assists and four rebounds. Jalyn Jackson chipped in 16 points and four steals as she hit 7-of-12 from the floor.

Keia McCullogh added 12 points while leading the Eagles with eight rebounds and five assists. Dezeree White also reached double figures with 12 points and seven rebounds, while Aleigha Mucker played 18 minutes off the bench and chipped in eight points and seven boards.

Midway's defense was the difference as they held the Trailblazers to 34 percent shooting for the game. They also forced the visitors into 29 turnovers which led to 25 points on the offensive end.

With the win, Midway advances to the RSC Tournament Semifinals where they will host IU East (Ind.) on Saturday (Feb. 26) at 3 p.m. ET in Marshall Gymnasium. Earlier this season it was the Red Wolves that handed the Eagles an 81-69 loss on Jan. 22.
