Fast start fuels big win for Midway Women's Basketball over Carlow

Box Score

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Following a big win over Point Park (Pa.) a couple of days prior, the Midway women's basketball team wrapped up their trip to Pittsburgh on Saturday (Jan. 7) when they matched up with Carlow (Pa.) at Oakland Catholic High School.

The Eagles sprinted to a 20-5 lead after one quarter and would take a 45-15 lead into the locker room before cruising to an easy 80-51 victory.

Midway – who has now won nine of their last 10 – improves their overall record to 11-6, while they move to 6-1 in River States Conference play. The Celtics, meanwhile, fall to 5-11 overall and 0-7 in league play with the loss.

Carlow tied the game at three early on, but Midway answered with a 13-0 run capped by a triple from Kassidy Daugherty (Owensboro, Ky.). A pair of free throws by Brianna Evans helped stall the run, but back-to-back layups by Semaj Adams (New Orleans, La.) and Asia Wheeler (Cleveland, Texas) put the bow on a 17-2 run that gave Midway a 20-5 lead after 10 minutes.

The opening frame saw Midway shoot 53.3 percent from the floor and hold Carlow to 6.7 percent. The Eagles also forced the Celtics into six turnovers.

Carlow scored the first six points of the second stanza, but over the final 9:16 of the quarter they were outscored 25-4 as Midway would take a 45-15 lead into the locker room.

Midway used a 10-0 run and would close the opening half on a 7-0 run after holding the Celtics without a point over the final four plus minutes.

Carlow shot 55.6 percent from the floor in the third period and outscored the opposition 24-17, but Midway had the game in hand leading by as many as 37 en route to the 80-51 victory.

A total of 13 players etched their name in the scoring column including three that scored in double figures. Atlantis White (Houston, Texas) scored a season-high 15 points in 16 minutes off the bench. The sophomore hit 6-of-10 from the floor and 3-of-6 from behind the arc.

Jalyn Jackson (Cold Spring, Ky.) had a solid all-around game with 11 points, six rebounds, and five assists, while Emma Gutman (Williamstown, Ky.) hit 3-of-6 from the floor and 2-of-4 from behind the arc for her 11 points.

Saturday's game wraps up a four-game road swing for the Blue and Gold as they get set to return to Marshall Gymnasium on Tuesday (Jan. 10) for a showdown with Rio Grande (Ohio) who is currently ranked No. 12 in the NAIA Top 25 Poll. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. ET.
