Box Score PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- After suffering a tough loss earlier in the week, the Midway women's volleyball team got a bounce back victory on Saturday (Oct. 7) when they traveled to Pittsburgh and picked up a 3-0 River States Conference victory over Point Park (Pa.).
The Eagles accumulated seven more kills than the home team and recorded 12 total blocks on their way to the 3-0 sweep (25-19, 25-22, 25-16) in a rematch of last year's RSC Tournament Semifinals that saw Midway record a 3-1 victory.
With the win, Kennedy Mang's squad improves to 7-8 overall and 2-6 in league play, while the Pioneers slip to 4-13 overall and 1-8 in conference play.
The victory saw Midway record a .218 hitting percentage with 41 kills, while their defense held Point Park to just 34 kills and a .092 attacking clip. The Eagles dominated the net picking up a season-high 12 blocks including five solo blocks and 14 block assists.
Midway trailed 11-10 in the opening frame, but got back-to-back kills from Hannah Brink (Greenville, Mich.) to spark a 5-0 run forcing a Point Park timeout. The home team cut the deficit to three, but the Eagles closed the set on a 3-0 run to clinch the 25-19 opening set win.
Point Park came out firing to open the second set and grabbed an early 9-6 lead, but Midway responded with a 9-2 run to take a 15-11 advantage. The Pioneers later went on an 8-3 run to regain a 22-21 lead and force Midway to call a quick timeout.
The Eagles answered the run and got kills from Meghan Adams (Paducah, Ky.), Emily Slaughter (Gallatin, Tenn.), and Aubry Koester (Apple Valley, Calif.) to secure the 25-22 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
The third set saw Midway post a .333 hitting percentage, while holding the Pioneers to a .032 mark. The set was tied at eight apiece, but the Eagles answered with a 14-4 run to take a 10-point edge en route to clinching the sweep with a 25-16 win in the third.
Koester led the offensive attack with 10 kills to go with her seven digs, while the trio of Adams, Brink, and Tori Richman (Fort Wayne, Ind.) each recorded seven kills apiece. Richman (five solo blocks) and Brink (six block assists) led the defensive effort at the net for the Eagles.
Katherine Rodriguez Ortiz (Fajardo, Puerto Rico) dished out 22 assists and picked up seven digs, while Marinna Liedle (St. Peters, Mo.) had 13 assists in the victory. Kylie Kohrs (Fort Thomas, Ky.) and Slaughter led the defensive effort from the backrow with 13 and 10 digs, respectively.
The Eagles are set to return to action on Tuesday (Oct. 10) when they open a three-match homestand when they welcome Boyce (Ky.) to Marshall Gymnasium. First serve is set for 7:30 p.m. ET.
